ABOUT
My name is Dave and I am a filmmaker. Before this I worked in the food and flavors sector of the chemistry business; specifically beverages. Bubblegum Berry vodka? Carbonated juices? Yup, I was one of the designers of your favorite thirst quencher.
Despite the job security of working in a lab, cinema called. I moved to New York City and found my first jobs on craigslist working as an unpaid production assistant. From there I networked and started getting paid gigs, and enrolling in the DGA’s Assistant Director Training Program. This education was like nothing else I had experienced, and I graduated with an encyclopedic knowledge of how to filmmaking works.
One might think that filmmaking and chemistry are totally different, but they are surprisingly similar. Before any project or experiment in the lab I would have to calibrate my instruments, clean the glassware, and double check expiration dates for chemicals. Before a shoot I make sure actors are cast, the camera and lighting packages are correct, and all members of the company know what the plan is before getting on set. Like a chemistry lab, a film set can also allow for serendipitous, beautiful things to occur. The discoveries of penicillin and safety glass weren’t anticipated, much like some of the most memorable lines in movies (i.e. “I’m walkin’ here!”).
My music videos have been featured on Tiny Mix Tapes, Exclaim!, and Atwood Magazine.
